Hi, you may be reading this expecting me to start off by telling you "Oh I got a cursed/haunted/hacked Pokemon game cartidge" but that isn't the real reason I'm telling the story you will read, as I didn't get my cartidge with save data on it, well... kind of...
You see I had just bought a Gameboy and a "used" Pokemon Red cartidge, just because I wanted to play (and hopefully beat) a generation one Pokemon game... Now I booted the game up and there was no new game option but I just assumed that it was just made this way by mistake... Now there was a save file but... and funnily enough... The file was just made and saved, no time, no Pokemon, just... a fresh file...
I lived with my younger brother as he doesn't have enough money for his own house, but that doesn't really matter right now... note that I said Right Now... but anyway when I booted the file it asked for the Player's name... which is really weird as you normally can't save until after you complete the intro scene with Professor Oak... but I thought about ACE (which loads code and NORMALLY uses a fresh file for the loading of the code) and thought that this file was just following new code... but it wasn't... I had also just got something to decompile old Pokemon cartidges and found that the save code was normal... no ACE was inputted to the file so I just finished the intro...
Oh yeah, I skipped over this little detail but I had no option to name my rival (not that it would have mattered I just name the player character and their rival[s] their canon names anyways) and moved on by naming myself RED I picked my starter which played out normally.
Now you (like probally everyone else) are most likey wondering when stuff gets spooky but please wait things don't get spooky till half way through the game.
Back to the story, I beat the optional Blue battle (Though his name wasn't "BLUE" but instead "JACOB" which I didn't look into at the time) and moved onto Veridian Forest. Upon reaching the forest I started searching for a Pikachu as I just adore the little electric mouse Pokemon and I gave it the same nickname I have always given my first Pikachu of a save file "PikachuYou" (A nickname I gave to a SHINY Pikachu on Pokemon GO) and started training it...
I then beat gym after gym until I beat the fourth gym in which I stopped playing for the day and put the game away.
However, remember when I mentioned my younger brother (And just so you know his name is Jacob... Yes the game took inspiration from my younger brother as the team looked like something he would throw together) thought it would be funny to buy one thunder stone and evolve my Pikachu into a Raichu then just hide that he evolved it... it was not as you can guess.
However, something he DIDN'T do that the game seemed to have done itself was rename the Raichu to "Gary" (Yes just like that, G-a-r-y, and no after all that happened I don't think it was based on the anime character of the same name) which was weird but I didn't think much of it as it was still a electric type and I love the electric type dispite the fact that I dislike evolving Pikachu (Yes I know I didn't evolve PikachuYou but still) and I just moved on...
I, then, finished the Team Rocket storyline and beat the rest of the gyms.... then did vicory road and reached the Elite Four but it took and total of four days to beat all of the Elite Four and Champion (Around 4 fifths of a day to beat each one... if I actually played for four full days) and I kept playing for around 13 more days and caught all of the Red version Pokemon (excluding Mew).
And I just more recently got a used Gameboy Color and a brand new Pokemon Crystal game. I then tried to transfer Gary to Pokemon Crystal (as I just got a link cable as well) and I got to the cable club trade area and the Time Capule and tried to transfer him up and the game told me "Gary doesn't want to leave" I tried many more times and it said the exact same thing every time.
So I gave up and actually tried something else and tried trading with another generation one cartidge and can you guess what happened...
"Gary doesn't want to leave Brendan"
And I just sat there reading the textbox as I named the player character "RED" as mentioned before and I was very confused at the game when I stopped staring at the textbox I hit start to see, yep my Trainer's name was changed the "Brendan" (Again just like that B-r-e-n-d-a-n, and for your information that is my irl name) and I just wanted to check Gary's summary page and he looked to be... angry? I thought When did Raichu have this sprite in Pokemon then realized that it didn't exist at all...
I, at this point, knew it wasn't a clever rom hack but instead a "haunted" game, which I didn't buy the game like this... this game had done this to it's self somehow... maybe it happened when PikachuYou evolved into Gary the Raichu.
No, no, no, no, that couldn't have been it.
Around this time a textbox opened... and it scared me what was in it...
"Gary missed you Brendan... are you still there?"
The game proceeded to crash after that...
I booted the game up again to find my save file it now had 255:59 time, 251 pokemon in the Pokedex (A number impossible for Generation one as there was 151 Pokemon in the Pokedex, which means that all the Generation 2 Pokemon were added to the Pokedex by force.
I, actually, had a read of the code and, by god, was it different from day one. The game's BASE code was changed to include all 100 Generation 2 Pokemon (Yes still no ACE) and other changes were the map's data matching that of Unova (Generation five's region) and actual encounter areas for Mew and Celebi. I, then, preceeded to boot up the save file and play through a bit more... this was my (unknown about) 2nd mistake (My first one was buying the Red cartidge) as when the Game loaded I got a textbox
"Gary:Oh your... back sorry for crashing the game Brendan... I just... needed to do something IMPORTANT"
I was then more confused then ever before as I just found out that this Raichu KNEW it was in a game...
and a new dialog box appeared with the following text.
"Gary:I needed to make some changes to the game's code so you could enjoy the gen 2 Pokemon here in Kanto..."
"I hope you like it"
I was even more confused...
Did it not realize it wasn't in Kanto, but in Unova
"Gary:Oh wait it isn't Kanto now that's right you have said many times that you liked Unova the best and I thought I should bring Unova to you Brendan..."
It was getting more and confusing as Gary is making me see all sorts of weird things...
One more box appeared to give me a bit more hope... I thought so atleast
"Gary:I know how much you like electric Type Pokemon and gave you a lot of them..."
"but I wouldn't check any other box but box 1... okay"
This line scared me as I had seen a bit of Pokepastas and knew you SHOULD check every box when in doubt
And so I did and found all of the Pokemon I caught I took a few of them out and saw...
decay
They were all dead...
all of my other pokemon...
just dead...
even the legendary birds and Mewtwo...
dead...
...
another textbox
"Gary:This is why I told you not to check the other boxes now you..."
"..."
"...need to..."
That was it, the game crashed after that last dialog box
I tried to play again but all the game would do is say one line then crash...
the line is...
"Gary:I'm sorry about this but people need to die for me to be happy now, Brendan, my little buddy."
I played Pokemon Fire Red after that but...
maybe you should read for yourself...
"Gary:Kanto is dead. Johto is Dead. Everyone in the world of Pokemon is dead. And it's your fault Brendan...."
"your fault I was brought back..."
"..."
"Your fault..."
"All your fault..."
"And there's nothing you can do to stop me anymore Brendan..."
"..."
"..."
"Gary:But like I said... I'm sorry for everything..."
"Now I can move on again..."
"but you will have to live with this pain..."
"knowing how some of us who've passed come back to haunt people..."
"this game is now unplayible..."
"Good bye Brendan... see you on the other side"
that was the last I saw of Gary the Raichu but from now on when I evolve a Pikachu on my own...
It will be named "Gary" to keep their sprit alive...
